SPENDING is easy but what is more difficult for most people is planning your spending so you can reach your own financial goals – which is something the Spending Planners Institute is trying to change.
According to Institute Founding Director David Wright, there is not enough education provided about how to effectively manage our money, while working towards our own financial goals.
“School students are taught a lot of different skills in preparation for life but it has always amazed me that they are not taught effective spending planning,” Mr Wright said.
Mr Wright said Spending Planning was much more than budgeting – where you look at the past and try to manage current income and expenses, hoping they match up.
“With Spending Planning, you look to the future – including your income, bills and expenses, but also at your goals and objectives – what you want to achieve financially. This more three-dimensional approach enables you to plan, dream and work out a plan to achieve your financial goals.”
Mr Wright said that is where the Spending Planners Institute came in.
“We have developed a Spending Planning system and train Spending Planners to help other people plan their spending and work towards their goals.
“Think of it as having your own personal coach – to help with the planning and, also to help keep you on track,” Mr Wright said.
“Spending Planners are not financial planners and are not trying to sell you financial products. They are independent and are there for you – to help you achieve your financial goals.
“Spending Planners can work with you so you can see what will happen to your finances before it happens, so you can plan to avoid the money-stress that normally goes with it.”
Mr Wright said the Institute trains individuals so they can become Spending Planners and help more people in more communities throughout Australia.
“Becoming a Spending Planner is also a great way for people wanting an additional, but flexible, income to achieve their own financial goals.
“So far we have more than 60 trained Spending Planners – they range from mums and dads looking to increase their own family income, to business professionals adding spending planning as an additional service for their clients and income stream for their business.
“You don’t have to be amazing with numbers or have an accountancy background, we teach you everything you need to know.”

Training with the Spending Planners Institute is comprehensive but simple and includes both online and face-to-face training. Once completed, the training allows Spending Planners to establish their own practice to help others, fully supported by the Institute.
“How many clients Spending Planners work with is totally up to them. We have Planners who started their business as an additional income stream to supplement what they get from their employment, who have been able to reduce their normal work hours because their Spending Planner income has increased.
“This means they have been able to focus more on their Spending Planning business while also enjoying the increased flexibility that that brings to their lives. We also have Planners who have added Spending Planning services to their existing businesses,” Mr Wright said.
